Maine’s eastern shoreline and fishing industry is being deeply affected by plastic pollution and climate change. In response, Apogee Arts’ The Sea We See provides opportunities for youth, older adults, and community groups from both rural and urban communities to explore the environmental and social implications of human impact on our world.
The Sea We See is an intergenerational, emotionally-charged pop up performance at the intersection of art, science, and community engagement. The project brought Apogee Arts into collaboration with students and faculty at Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS), professional Portland dancers, and Peter Neill, founder of the World Ocean Observatory. Students, dancers, scientists, and educators premiered the project in September 2023 through a pop-up performance along the Eastern Promenade in Portland.

The collaboration at the heart of The Sea We See was not only interdisciplinary—it was also intergenerational. The project began to break down the siloed nature of departments within the Portland Arts and Technology High School as well as the divisions that can exist between generations in the dance world.
Additionally, the work would not have been possible if not for the willingness of all the participants to tackle unexpected dilemmas of scheduling, traveling, rehearsing in non-traditional spaces, transporting props and people, and documenting the whole process.
